Your giving today is helping us continue serving the mission God has placed upon Sheridan Church. It is because of generous supporters like you that we can continue spreading God’s word.
Online giving has never been more safe and secure. Your gift of any amount to Sheridan Church is tax deductible.
- Now what is our motive for giving? The answer should be love. Everything we do should flow out of love. We give because we love. Giving is the natural expression of love. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son. Loving and giving go hand and hand. We give to the Church because we love people and want to see people come to knowing relationship withJesus Christ.
- What is so amazing about giving is that when we give God in return gives back to us and blesses us. There was once an elderly lady who was a major giver in her church. One day a young deacon asked her if she thought it was wise to give as much as she did. The woman looked at the young man and said here is what I know. When I shovel out, God always shovels back in. The difference between God’s shovel and my shovel is that his is much bigger. So I think it is wise.” We all know this is true so what is it that keeps us from giving and being generous? What paralyzes us from walking in generosity? It is the fear of lack; that if we do give we may not have enough at the end of the month.
- But when we realize that God is our source and he is the one who owns the cattle on a thousand hills. Lack has to exit the back door. It is time for us to begin to evict the fear of lack from our lives. God wants to be our source. Look at 2ndCorinthians 9: “So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to visit you in advance and finish the arrangements for the generous gift you had promised. Then it will be ready as a generous gift, not as one grudgingly given. 6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;their righteousness endures forever. 10Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.12This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!”I absolutely love this passage. Paul teaches us four principles on generosityhere. And remember if you want Bible results you must do Bible things. Number one is in verse 6: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Sow small, reap small. Sow big, reap big.Plant a seed according to the harvest you want. If a farmer wants his entire field to grow crop he has to scatter seed all over the field.Number two is in verse 7: Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. There are two ends of the spectrum when it comes to giving. There are those who give because they have been manipulated by a smooth talking preacherand give under compulsion with the wrong motivation and then there are those who have great greed in their hearts who have the hardest time letting the check go. God is displeased with both of those types of givers. What he loves is a cheerful giver. Someone who loves to have the opportunity to give; I can think of a few people right now in this
room who I know are cheerful and generous givers. You see giving is a privilege and an honor entrusted to you by God, therefore we should come with an attitude of gratitude and be cheerful givers. Number 3 is verse 10-11: You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. You are blessed so that you can truly be a blessing. But it is awfully hard to be a blessing if you do not have the resources to do so. That is why God gives us the principles and abilities to gain wealth so that when the time arises to be a blessing we are able to just that. And number 4 is in verse 12:Your giving is an expression of thanks to God. When you give you are saying thank you to God not just in words but also in your deeds. The act of giving shows the content of your heart. Jesus said where your treasure is that is where your heart is. If yousay your heart is in reaching people, but your finances are not then something is off.Our giving is powerful. Years ago, a preacher noticed afamily standing in front of him at a New Orleans convenience store did not have enough money to pay for their few items. He tapped the man on the shoulder and said, “You don’t need to turn around, but please accept this money.” The man took the money without ever seeing the preacher.Nine years later, the pastor was invited to speak at a church in New Orleans. After the service, a man walked up to the preacher and shared this story about how he had come to faith in Christ:“Several years ago, my wife and our child were destitute. We had lost everything, had no jobs, no money and were living in our car. We also lost all hope, and agreed to a suicide pact, including our child. However, we decided to first give our son some food, so we drove to a convenience store to buy him some food and milk.” “While we were standing in line at the store, we realized that we did not have enough money to pay for these items, but a man behind us asked us to please take the money from his hand and not look at him. This man told us that ‘Jesus loves you.’” “We left the store, drove to our designated suicide site, and wept for hours. We couldn’t go through with it, so we drove away. As we drove, we noticed a church with a sign out front which said, ‘Jesus love you.’ We went to thatchurch the very next Sunday, and both my wife and I were saved that day.” He then told the pastor, “When you began speaking this morning, I knew immediately that you were the man who gave us that money.” How did he know? The pastor was from South Africa and had a very distinct accent. He continued, “Your act of kindness was much more than a simple good deed. Three people are alive today because of it.”You do not realize how powerful your giving is. Your giving changes people’s lives. That is why the enemytries to convince you that you do not need to give. But when you courageously give and trust God the blessing of God will overflow in your life in ways that will blow you away.As Christians we should be the most generous people every where we go. I am sohappy to tell you that we have one of the most generous churches in all of Tulsa. As a pastor I am very proud of that fact. You all are some of the most generous people I know. I am preaching to the choir today for most of you. And it is a good reminder for all of us the joy of giving.
